New voting map gets approved on first reading

Aberdeen’s new voting map was approved on first reading Monday by the Aberdeen City Council.
The new boundaries were crafted by a redistricting commission, using 2010 census figures.
The redistricting map is included in an ordinance that amends Chapter 18 of the Aberdeen Municipal Code concerning redistricting. A public hearing was held last Thursday. At Monday’s meeting, the council approved a special two-day retail on-off sale malt beverage license on July 13-14 for the Aberdeen Music Fest at Central Park. That request was made by the Aberdeen Downtown Association.
The council also approved a community event permit for that event, requested by Pepper Entertainment. The approval includes a time extension for the festival until midnight both days providing that proper security is provided, area residents, churches and businesses are notified and a revised site plan is in place.
The council tabled for at least a week a community event permit application from Jason Hepola for Mingle on Main Street, planned for July 13-14 on Main Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.
According to the overview in the packet given to council members, city departments have concerns regarding security, area business notifications, health and alcohol issues involved in the application.
Also Monday, the city entered into a marketing agreement with a company called Utility Service Partners Private Label Inc., which does business as Service Line Warranties of America. That company will provide utility service line warranties to city residents. The program is voluntary. Those who take part will pay a monthly fee for the warranty, which will provide repairs for water and sewer service lines.
Utility Service Partners administers the National League of Cities Service Line Warranty Program. The council chose the option that will give Aberdeen residents a 10 percent discount from standard rates.
There will be no direct cost to the city, which will provide residents’ addresses to the
company.
