Residential Infrastructure Day 2026 — Going the extra mile for the “last mile”

by | May 15, 2026 | Customer Testimonials, Water Solutions, Knowledge Center

Every day, your residents, your members, or your customers depend on residential infrastructure to keep life flowing — from running water and reliable electricity to heating, cooling, internet, and sewer service.

For some households, these systems work quietly in the background. For others, aging equipment, unexpected repairs, or service disruptions can create real financial and emotional stress.

That’s why Residential Infrastructure Day (RID) matters.

Observed annually on May 20, Residential Infrastructure Day, established by HomeServe in 2024, aims to recognize the essential “last mile” infrastructure that connects homes to utility systems and raise awareness about the importance of maintaining it.

What Is Residential Infrastructure Day?

RID shines a spotlight on the systems and people that help keep communities safe, comfortable, and connected.

This includes:

  • Water and sewer lines
  • Electric and cable connections
  • Heating and cooling systems
  • Water heaters and household equipment
  • Municipal, cooperative, and utility teams and local contractors maintaining these systems every day

While large-scale infrastructure often gets the attention, RID focuses on the infrastructure residents experience most directly: the systems serving homes and neighborhoods.

Why RID Matters

Across the U.S., millions of homes and neighborhood systems rely on aged infrastructure. The median age of owner-occupied homes in the U.S. is now around 40 years old, with nearly half built before 1980.* Water and sewer systems in many communities are also decades old, increasing the likelihood of leaks, outages, and costly repairs.*

And those costs can hit hard.

For low- to moderate-income households especially, an unexpected water line repair, sewer issue, or HVAC failure can quickly become a financial burden. Residential Infrastructure Day helps bring awareness not only to the importance of infrastructure itself, but also to the need for education, investment, and support that helps communities stay resilient.

For municipalities, cooperatives, and utilities, RID is also an opportunity to highlight the work being done every day to:

  • Maintain reliable service
  • Modernize aging systems that connect to and support homes
  • Respond to outages and emergencies
  • Educate residents, Members, and customers
  • Support stronger, more sustainable communities

It’s also a moment to recognize the people behind the work — the crews, operators, technicians, engineers, customer service teams and local contractors helping keep essential services running.

How Communities Can Participate

Residential Infrastructure Day encourages residents and communities to take a closer look at the systems supporting everyday life — and the people working hard to keep them running.

Join the “Last Mile Challenge”

Take a one-mile walk through your neighborhood or service area and notice the infrastructure around you — utility poles, hydrants, storm drains, transformers, water meters, and more.

Turn it into an infrastructure scavenger hunt with kids or give a wave or high five to a field crew, operator, or local technician you see working hard in your community. Chances are, you’ll spot someone helping keep essential services running.

Share Stories & Celebrate Infrastructure Professionals

Highlight local improvement projects, infrastructure investments, or community partnerships making a difference for residents, Members, and customers — and recognize the crews, operators, technicians, engineers, and customer service teams helping keep communities running every day.

Promote Education & Awareness

Help residents better understand the systems supporting their homes and communities by sharing information about home maintenance, infrastructure responsibilities, and available support programs.

More Than Infrastructure

Residential Infrastructure Day is ultimately about people.

It’s about ensuring communities have access to safe water, reliable heating and cooling, communication services, and dependable utility connections — and recognizing that strong infrastructure supports public health, safety, affordability, and quality of life.

This May 20, take a moment to recognize the systems — and the people — helping keep communities connected every day.
