Many homeowners are unaware that they are responsible for the service lines that connect their home to [COMMUNITY]’s water and sewer systems. These lines run from the connection from the utility mains to the exterior wall of the home.

Because these lines are out of sight below ground, many homeowners don’t think about maintenance or their aging pipelines. When these lines break, they can cost thousands of dollars to repair and interrupt service.

To protect [COMMUNITY] residents against these inconveniences, we have partnered with Service Line Warranties of Canada to educate homeowners about these service lines and offer an optional warranty to shield them from the financial shock of an unexpected service line repair.

Eighty percent of Canadians have experienced an emergency home repair over the course of a year, with 9% of those having either a water or sewer service line issue.

Depending on the materials used for your service lines, the useful lifespan of a service line can range widely – for example, a copper water line has an average life expectancy of 50 to 80 years and terra cotta pipes can last for 50 to 60 years. Nearly 20 percent of Canadian housing stock was built before 1970, meaning their service lines may be approaching the end of their lifespan.

[COMMUNITY] knows that unexpected service line repairs can be a burden on our residents, so we have partnered with Service Line Warranties of Canada to provide an optional emergency service line repair program.

The program helps us educate homeowners about their responsibilities and the risks associated with their service lines. An optional repair service plan also will be available to protect residents from the cost of an unexpected service line repair. This program is administered and paid for by Service Line Warranties of Canada. No tax dollars support this program.

Half of Canadians don’t know who is responsible for the water and sewer service lines which connect their homes to their utilities, according to the Canadian State of the Home. A quarter don’t know who is responsible, while 21 percent think their local municipality is responsible and 18 percent think repairs are covered by their homeowners’ insurance policy.

Unfortunately, all of these may be wrong. [COMMUNITY] is not responsible for service lines on private property, and homeowners’ insurance may cover some damages, but the repair or replacement of the line may not be covered. Some insurance companies offer service line coverage as a “rider” to a policy. Homeowners should contact their home insurance provider to learn if their service lines are covered.

To educate homeowners about their responsibilities and to protect them from the unexpected cost of a service line repair, [COMMUNITY] has partnered with Service Line Warranties of Canada to offer an optional repair service plan to residents.

Educational mailings will occasionally be sent to residents about their responsibilities. [COMMUNITY] has not provided residents’ information to Service Line Warranties of Canada; all mailings utilize a third-party mailing list. Service Line Warranties of Canada administers and pays for the program and program mailings; no tax dollars go toward the program.

The program is voluntary and provided so residents may plan ahead to protect themselves from the cost of service line repairs. For more information, visit [YOUR URL] or slwofc.ca.

94 percent of Canadians want their local leaders to educate them about their responsibility to maintain the water and sewer service lines that connect their home to their local utility, according to the most recent Canadian State of the Home survey.

That is because half of Canadians don’t know who is responsible for maintaining and repairing their service lines, and one-in-five think that it is the responsibility of their local community. Unfortunately, they’re wrong – [COMMUNITY] is not responsible for plumbing on private property – and often don’t learn this until they have a failed service line. Then, they find out that the service line is their responsibility – and that a repair is expensive.

[COMMUNITY] leaders are listening to homeowners, so we have partnered with Service Line Warranties of Canada to provide educational mailings on service line responsibilities and an optional repair service plan to protect them from the cost of an unanticipated repair.

The service repair plan provides residents with a 24-hour hotline, and Service Line Warranties of Canada will dispatch a local, pre-vetted plumber to a participants’ homes to repair their service lines and pay the contractor directly. For more information, visit [YOUR URL] or slwofc.ca.

When a water or sewer service line fails, you want it fixed as fast as possible. It’s important that, in your urgency, you don’t over look important things, including obtaining proper permits and ensuring the work is done to [COMMUNITY]’s municipal code. Additionally, anyone you hire to do this work should be properly licensed to do work in our province and have both liability insurance and worker’s compensation insurance. This protects you from having unsafe or shoddy work done or interfering with sale of your home in the future.

Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find a contractor, with a third of Canadians reporting an issue finding an available contractor. To assist homeowners with this issue in repairing their water or sewer service lines, [COMMUNITY] has partnered with Service Line Warranties of Canada to provide an optional service repair plan. This plan provides participating homeowners with a 24-hour hotline to have a qualified, local and pre-vetted contractor dispatched to their home for the repair.
